Serotonin (pronounced) (5-hydroxytryptamine, or 5-HT) is a monoamine neurotransmitter synthesized in serotonergic neurons in the central nervous system (CNS) and enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal tract of animals including humans. Serotonin is also found in many mushrooms and plants, including fruits and vegetables. Function: Tryptophan is an amino acid occurring naturally in food. In the brain, it is converted to 5-hydroxy-tryptophan (5-HTP), which, in turn, is converted to serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter essential to regulating appetite, sleep, mood and pain levels. 5－羥色胺在神經組織中有重要的功能，目前已肯定中樞神經系統有5－羥色胺能神經元。5－羥色胺可使大部分交感神經節前神經元興奮，而使付交感節前神經元抑制。常用于消化道神經內分泌細胞及其腫瘤的研究。5-羥色胺，又稱血清素，由消化道EC細胞所分泌。 |
