background: The major pathway for the biosynthesis of phosphatidylcholine occurs via the CDP-choline pathway. The protein encoded by this gene is the initial enzyme in the sequence and may play a regulatory role. The encoded protein also catalyzes the phosphorylation of ethanolamine. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008] Function: The dominant pathway for biosynthesis of phosphatidylcholine occurs through the CDP-choline pathway. Choline kinase alpha (CHK) is the first enzyme in the pathway and may thereby play an upstream regulatory role in lipid transport and metabolism. CHK additionally catalyzes phosphorylation of ethanolamine. Subunit: Heterodimer with CHKB (By similarity). Homodimer. Subcellular Location: Cytoplasmic Similarity: Belongs to the choline/ethanolamine kinase family.
